Join us for a movie talk with Kelly Ross, Nyabuoy Chan, Surin Kim, Manger Baw, and Cassie Uecker – local community leaders specializing in entrepreneurship, refugee advocacy, and artisan businesses – following the 1:00 p.m. screening of SHE RISES UP on Sunday, August 4. Presented by Friends of The Ross.
Before and after the screening, be sure to check out the ECHO Shop pop-up sale in the lobby, with artisanal products made by refugee and immigrant women entrepreneurs in Nebraska.

KELLY ROSS
Kelly Ross is from Lincoln, Nebraska, and graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a degree in Spanish. Since college, she has been working with refugees and immigrants in a variety of ways, as a caseworker, paralegal, citizenship instructor, and ESL instructor. Through her work, she has developed a passion for working with those new to the United States and insight into the unique barriers they face. After claiming to be a “cat person” for years, Kelly finds herself with two dogs that bring her so much joy. She also loves to read and watch trivia shows with her husband.
SURIN KIM
“I am charged with helping Textiles, Merchandising & Fashion Design and Nebraska Extension to build on and expand the reach and effectiveness of existing youth entrepreneurship curricula and to develop, disseminate and evaluate programs focused on entrepreneurship development for youth, women, immigrants and underserved constituencies. I teach experiential learning courses regarding product development, entrepreneurship, and innovation for students and professionals. I also develop collaborative frameworks and networks aimed at strengthening and sustaining the social and economic ecosystems that make successful communities places where people want to live and work.
The focus area of my entrepreneurial career has been innovative product and business development. I have worked as a Senior Product Manager at Amazon.com, Inc. after completing my M.B.A. degree with concentration of Entrepreneurial Management as well as Marketing and Operations Management; co-founded MA.CHEF, a Seoul startup company offering online and mobile platforms for personal chef services; served as Strategic Planning Manager and Change Agent for Korea Telecom at Innovation Management Center and CEO’s office; and served as Human Resources Consultant for Sun Microsystems, among other positions. Throughout my career, I have launched many products and businesses in diverse industries. “
MANGER BAW
Born and raised on the border of Thailand and Myanmar, Manger is an indigenous Karen (Knyaw), former refugee, and education advocate. She is a visionary storyteller dedicated to self-improvement and the betterment of others.
Manger founded Knyaw Academy, a social media-based youth empowerment and educational advising program. The mission of Knyaw Academy is to provide educational services and products for professional development to the global Knyaw community, aiming to enhance leadership potential and social well-being. Manger holds both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree from the University of Nebraska Omaha. She now works as a freelance consultant, certified strengths coach, and youth program facilitator.
CASSIE UECKER
Cassie Uecker is the Director of Marketing and Operations at Sapahn, a company dedicated to empowering artisans and championing human rights in business. With a solid foundation in both marketing and operations, Cassie plays a vital role in amplifying the brand’s story and social impact while ensuring operational efficiency.

NYABUOY CHAN
Nyabuoy Chan was born in a small town in South Sudan called Nasir. She came to the United States in 2004 after an arranged marriage organized by her parents and her ex-husband’s family. Nyabuoy is the owner of a cleaning company, Buay Cleaning Services, and she also works for the Asian Community & Cultural Center as the Women’s & Elders Program Assistant Manager. Being a single mother of six beautiful children, she has learned to have great balance between personal and work responsibilities by setting priorities for each task. She is certified as a Peer Support Specialist, Community Health Worker, and trained as a Domestic Violence Specialist. She is a hard working person who believes that a combination of hard work and determination are keys for success in every job.
