BRANDO ON FILM: A 100th Anniversary Celebration

The UNL English Department Film Studies Program and The Ross present a series of film screenings celebrating Nebraska-born actor and director Marlon Brando’s 100th birthday. Screenings in this series are free to all students with a student ID and $5 for general admission.

BRANDO ON FILM is part of the UNL Film Studies spring semester curriculum, overseen by Dr. Michael Page (Assistant Professor of Practice and Coordinator of Curriculum for the Department of English) and Dr. James Brunton (Assistant Professor of Practice and Coordinator of Film Studies for the Department of English), and will include poster art and flyers designed by students, along with two screenings of student made projects about the actor’s life and career.

A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE (1951)

Based on the play by Tennessee Williams, this renowned drama follows troubled schoolteacher Blanche DuBois (Vivien Leigh) as she leaves small-town Mississippi and moves to New Orleans to live with her sister, Stella (Kim Hunter), and Stella’s brutish husband, Stanley (Marlon Brando). Blanche’s presence causes problems for Stella and Stanley, who already have a volatile relationship, leading to even greater conflict. (d. Elia Kazan | Rated PG | 2 hours, 2 min)

THE GODFATHER (1972)

Widely regarded as one of the greatest films of all time, this mob drama, based on Mario Puzo’s novel of the same name, focuses on the powerful Italian-American crime family of Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando). When the don’s youngest son, Michael (Al Pacino), reluctantly joins the Mafia, he becomes involved in the inevitable cycle of violence and betrayal. (d. BEDTIME STORY (1964)

Marlon Brando, David Niven, and Shirley Jones star in this classic comedy caper about two cunning conmen on the French Riviera. The caddish Freddy Benson (Brando) enjoys setting up elaborate ruses to seduce women. The suave Lawrence Jameson (Niven) likes to pose as a prince to swindle the wealthy. When the two men meet, each perceives the other as an interloper and a threat. Upon the arrival of vacationing soap heiress Janet Walker (Jones), the two sweet-talking scoundrels compete to trick her out of both her clothes and her fortune. (d. THE FRESHMAN (1990)

Clark Kellogg (Matthew Broderick) is robbed moments after arriving in New York, so when he sees his mugger several days later, he confronts him. The man promises to return his property and get him a job with his uncle, Carmine Sabatini (Marlon Brando), who turns out to be a Mafia boss bearing an uncanny resemblance to Don Corleone from The Godfather. As Clark continues his shady work for Carmine, he discovers an elaborate underworld that has caught the attention of the authorities. As things come to a head, not everything is what it seems. (d. ONE-EYED JACKS (1961)

After pulling a bank heist in Mexico, the outlaw Rio (Marlon Brando) and his partner, Dad Longworth (Karl Malden), make a run for it, but Dad has bigger plans. He betrays Rio and absconds with the loot, and Rio ends up in prison. Years pass before Rio finally breaks free to enact his long-plotted revenge. Tracking Dad to California, Rio learns he’s become a sheriff — which is no deterrent — but when Rio falls for Dad’s stepdaughter, Louisa (Pina Pellicer), he has second thoughts. (d.
