Amanda (Juliette Binoche) and her stepfather Martin (Tom Courtenay) struggle with a moral issue that divides them. Has Amanda’s mother Leslie (Anna Calder-Marshall) who is suffering from advanced dementia, lost the ability to make critical decisions in her own best interests? And, if so, who is responsible – a spouse, a child, an institution – for making such a determination? As Amanda and Martin are forced to make increasingly difficult choices, the repercussions spiral out of their control.

Winner of Berlinale’s Silver Bear Jury Prize and the Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance for Courtenay and Calder-Marshall.

Reviews

“Hammer offers no neat conclusions in this empathetic and intelligent picture, which asks who gets to advocate for vulnerable loved ones who can no longer speak for themselves.”

Wendy Ide

Observer (UK)

“Queen at Sea is a harrowing, vital film that offers an authentic vision of a future that many of us will likely experience.”

David Jenkins

Little White Lies

“Lance Hammer’s film starring Juliette Binoche as the concerned daughter of a mother with advancing dementia presents an unsentimental yet highly empathetic meditation on the limits of love in the face of the brutal march of time.”

Rachel Pronger

Sight & Sound

“More than holding its own alongside other prominent dramas about the ravages of age, Queen at Sea tackles its themes fearlessly, thanks to rigorous execution and a quartet of superb performances.”

Jonathan Romney
