Amidst the turmoil of the Thirty Years’ War, somewhere in Germany, a mysterious soldier (Sandra Hüller) appears in a secluded protestant village. Small and quiet, his face disfigured by a scar, this stranger declares himself the heir of a long-abandoned farmstead and produces a document to support his claim to the suspicious villagers. With time, he overcomes their doubts and shows himself to be a hardworking, God-fearing man, becoming part of the community in a quest for acceptance made up of impossible deceit. The true and twisted tale of a deceiver of land and folk, who, defying her birth as a woman, comported herself as a man and committed many a wicked deed.

Reviews

“On one level, it’s a manifesto for self-invention and for gender equality, with Rose as a sort of domestic Joan of Arc fighting the established order. It’s also a meticulously mounted historical study, and a starkly beautiful one.”

Jonathan Romney

Screen International

“Not since Sally Potter’s breakout feature “Orlando” has a film explored gender privilege so effectively through a historical lens and via a singularly astounding European actress.”

Ryan Lattanzio

IndieWire

“Watching Hüller, already a master of submerged heartbreak in so many previous parts, we might begin to suspect that we’re witnessing her greatest role yet.”

Bilge Ebiri

New York Magazine / Vulture

“The title role in the austerely beautiful character study Rose is such a thrilling fit for Sandra Hüller that it becomes impossible to imagine any other actor nailing the part.”

David Rooney
