The Norman A Geske Cinema Showcase brings a world of filmmakers to Lincoln

Visiting Artist Program

As long as there has been a film theater at the University of Nebraska, there has been a visiting artist program. Starting in 1973, the Sheldon Film Theater Film/Video Showcase welcomed guests, including Richard Myers (1973), Jon Jost (1975), Wim Wenders (1982), Wallace Shawn (1982), Martin Sheen (1985), and Werner Herzog (1986).

1990-2006

In 1990 the Sheldon Film Theater became the Mary Riepma Ross Film Theater when Mary Ross, one of the program’s most ardent and long-time supporters, established a $3.5 million irrevocable trust at the University Foundation for the purpose of building and endowing “The Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.”

Guests of the Mary Riepma Ross Film Theater Film/Video Showcase and later the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center Film/Video Showcase included Fairuza Balk (1993), John Beasley (1998), Jamie Babbit (2000), Peter Riegert (2001), Bill Plympton (2005), and Kevin Willmott (2006).

2007-Present

Beginning in 2007, the visiting artist series was renamed in honor of the film program’s founder Norman A. Geske (1915-2014), a legacy we still honor today. With ongoing support from Friends of The Ross, the Norman A. Geske Film/Video Showcase (now the Norman A. Geske Cinema Showcase) has featured Arthur Dong (2008), Harley Jane Kozak (2009), Seymour Cassel (2009), Sherman Alexie (2013), Signe Baumane (2014), Penelope Spheeris (2015), John Waters (2015), Chloé Zhao (2016), Kelly Reichardt (2016), Irene Bedard (2017), Dan Mirvish (2018), Emily M. Danforth (2018), Alexandria Bombach (2019), Chris Innis (2021), Lynn Lowry (2021), Kate Beecroft
(2025), and most recently Eva Thomas (2026).
