9 films. 9 stories. 9 extraordinary humans un-defining feminine. UNL’s Outdoor Adventures presents a free screening of the No Man’s Land Film Festival on Friday, November 10th at 7:00 p.m.

No Man’s Land‘s aim is to un-define feminine in adventure and sport through film by creating safe and inclusive platforms that further champion women, transgender, and gender-fluid communities with grit, hustle, determination, and boundless passion, investing them with the respect, support and media recognition they deserve. This event is made possible by the generous donation of Patti and Joel Meier. Doors open for the event at 6:30 pm; the 90-minute show begins at 7:00 pm CST. This is a FREE event and all are welcome! Tickets available at the door or RSVP in advance using the link at the top of the page. 

All films featured in this year’s festival were created by an all-women or gender-nonconforming production team. 

WHO ARE YOU TO TELL A STORY
Director: Erica Hinck

An intimate view of the filmmaker’s frustrations and fears. Erica never thought this project would be viewed on such a big screen by so many people at once. While it is scary for her, she’s thankful for those who make her feel brave and for all of you for watching it now. (3 minutes)

WELL WORN LIFE WITH DANI REYES-ACOSTA
Directors: Daniel Mitchell + Trent Sugg

Well Worn Life is a short documentary film series by Arkansas-based outdoor company Livsn Designs. Well Worn Life reveals the recipes of outdoor-minded individuals who love life deeply – and live it to the fullest extent – as their brand name, livsnjutare suggests. In their newest film, meet Dani Reyes-Acosta: a mountain athlete, land cultivator, and storyteller whose path consistently seeks the limits of her possibility. Ticking off climbs and ski lines across South America, cultivating her role as a legacy Coloradoan, and setting the course for the future of outdoor access in remote communities, Dani is a visceral example of how self-care and self-determination can harmonize via the outdoors.(6 minutes)

INSEPARABLE: SKYE
Director: Andrew Harrison Brown

History shows Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians) climbed over mountains and scrambled rocks for trading purposes since time out of mind. Today, few Indigenous members of the islands see themselves reflected in the modern sports’ culture. Recognizing the need to bridge the connection, Skye Kolealani Razon-Olds founded Kanaka Climbers. Through her non-profit work, Skye and her family are calling on the climbing community to advocate for the protection of sacred spaces, including land and cultural resources, that are under threat of development. PART OF ME: ALEXANN
Director: Claudia Kedney Bolduc

Growing up in Mashteuiatsh, an Innu community along the shores of Lac Saint-Jean, Alexann has a strong connection to the water. Being the first Indigenous person to attempt swimming across Quebec’s inland sea, she finds strength in both her community and the water itself. (5 minutes)

Apayauq Reitan’s journey to become the first out transgender woman to complete the legendary Iditarod sled dog race. (16 minutes)

LETTING GO OF THE GRADE

Letting Go of the Grade follows four climbers as they work to overcome outside pressures to enjoy climbing. (12 minutes)

ROCKIES REPEAT
Director: Caroline Hedin

Rockies Repeat is a documentary and digital storytelling project that unites scientists on the frontlines of climate change, artists in the field, and cultural knowledge keepers to bear witness to a changing Rocky Mountain landscape while inspiring action to preserve these places for future generations. ERIN MCGRADY – WHO IS A RUNNER? Directors: Faith Briggs + Tim Kemple

It takes the first 5-6 miles for the “bird’s nest” in Erin McGrady’s head to unravel. And then, putting one foot in front of the other, the photographer and writer work to create and celebrate safe spaces for others in the queer community. Together, with her wife Caroline Whatley, in spite of all they are up against as queer women in the South, they turn their attention toward the joy they get from traveling and creating community.
