DEATH OF ZYGIELBOJM
(Directed by Ryszard Brylski | 2021 | 1 hour, 26 minutes)
A story about the tragic fate of a Jewish political activist who committed suicide in London on May 12, 1943. His act was to be a protest against the world’s inaction in the face of the tragedy of the Holocaust. A story told from the perspective of a young British journalist who, like most contemporary people of the Western world, was unaware of the scale of the crime taking place in eastern Europe at that time.
Szmul Arthur Zygielbojm, a member of the Polish Government-in-Exile was charged with receiving intelligence from Poland about the fate of Polish Jews. His job was to convince the Allies, especially the British and American governments, to take action to save the Jews being murdered by the tens of thousands in Poland by the Nazis. He failed. This is the story of his final days and the tragic but heroic end of his life.
