Cantankerous old buzzard Woody Grant (Bruce Dern) can barely walk down the street of his home in Billings, Mont., without stopping for a drink. So when Woody receives a sweepstakes notice in the mail and insists on making a 750-mile trip to Lincoln, Neb., to collect his prize, it falls to baffled son David (Will Forte) to accompany him. During a stop in their Nebraska hometown, word gets out about Woody’s fortune, first making him a hero, then later, the target of predatory people.

Alexander Payne once quipped his road pic was just a glorified Ma and Pa Kettle movie. That was before it earned six Oscar nominations. While on the surface a simple, corny story of crazy old Woody (Bruce Dern) embarking on a fool’s quest, it turns into a deeply moving journey that sees him repair a broken relationship, confront a tragic-comic past, and save face amongst his rural tribe. Largely shot in northeast Nebraska (Norfolk, Plainview, Hooper, Osmond, Pierce, Stanton, Elgin), the film features stunning black and white photography by Phedon Papamichael. Despite Woody having burned bridges and wandered afar, he finds one can never fully escape home or family.
